Who Should Make A Will?

Back to Wills and Probate

If you care about what happens to your property after you die, you should make a Will. Without one, the State directs who inherits, so your friends, favourite charities and relatives may get nothing.

It is vitally important if you are:

Not married – living as “husband and wife”

In a registered civil partnership.

Looking after children or dependants.

Without a Will, there may be uncertainty if any of the above applies to you.

There are other circumstances where legal advice should also be sought:

Several dependants possibly making a claim on your estate.

Should you want to make a trust.

If you are not British or you do not live here.

You live in the UK, but own property abroad.

You own all or part of a business.

The Financial Services Authority does not regulate Will writing, trust advice and some types of protection policy.
